MURMURATION

Murmuration is a French mid-sized company founded in March 2019 with the objective of integrating environmental considerations into every decision-making process. Initially supported by the European Space Agency (ESA) through its business incubation program (ESA-BIC) and backed by strong and long-standing expertise in the space sector, the company leverages satellite-based Earth Observation (EO), particularly through the Copernicus program, to achieve this goal. Since March 2019, the team has grown from two founders to 20 full-time employees, carrying out activities aimed at extracting insights from EO data and making them accessible to a wide audience—from institutions to businesses and the general public.

Murmuration has developed a unique capability to extract more than 25 environmental indicators across soil monitoring, water quality, air quality, biodiversity, and anthropogenic pressure characterization, covering five main thematic areas.

These indicators aggregate data from Copernicus services and Sentinel satellites (including CAMS, CLMS, CMEMS, C3S, Sentinel-1 and Sentinel-2), as well as other sources (meteorological data, mobile phone data), to quantify the state of the environment anywhere on the planet. These developments are progressively being deployed operationally (notably on DIAS platforms and Destination Earth – DestinE), enabling systematic and up-to-date information extraction aligned with user needs.

Murmuration designs environmental monitoring dashboards for decision-makers and local authorities to support their decision-making processes and improve the integration of environmental conditions into territorial planning. We are a trusted partner and provider in France and internationally, with direct contracts with major stakeholders such as the European Space Agency (ESA), the European Commission, the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), VINCI Concessions, the ACCOR Group, the Malta Tourism Authority (MTA), and various local tourism authorities across Europe. We also benefit from a long-standing partnership with CNES, the French Space Agency, which provides valuable support in terms of expertise and innovation.
